Scones are and always will be, a favourite with us all but what way do you lean when it comes to choosing a scone? For me, I almost always choose a savoury scone. I just love the combination of flavours and they work so well with soup or a salad for lunch. If I’m on the run, I feel they are a better choice when I don’t have time to sit and eat breakfast but that’s probably all in my head.
I wanted to take my hugely successful Fluffiest Gluten Free Scone recipe and adapt it to make a delicious and really tasty savoury scone and had lots of flavour combinations running through my head. Then it hit me! How I love a sandwich full of rich, mature cheddar cheese and a caramelised onion relish and this would work so well in a scone version. Even though most shop bought jars of relish are probably gluten free due to their ingredients, unfortunately it’s not really worth taking a chance so it’s safer to make your own and my recipe is very quick and simple and you’ll have some leftover to use in a toasted sandwich!
These scones are just perfect, fresh from the oven, warm and maybe spread with a little butter or chutney. Seriously very comforting food! The recipes comes together quickly and they are definitely worth making for a perfect mid morning or afternoon treat.
These scones are so full of comfort, there should be a prescription for them. They are so tasty and I’ve given you some ideas for adapting them to suit your own personal taste.
This recipe will make 6 good sized scones and they freeze really well too so you can happily double up the recipe. I’ve also added an idea if you’re feeding little people to make them more appealing.
They are quick to put together and make the most delicious snack or serve with some warm soup..
I’ve tried a few scone recipes and found this one and this method to be the most successful for me every time. Great big high scones are a pleasure to eat and this recipe is so easy to adapt so you can make different types of scones to suit your occasion.
Scones are really best eaten on the day they are made unless you freeze them and then you can pop them in a moderate oven for about 10 minutes to have lovely, fluffy perfect scones again. I’ve made the ones in the pictures here a Lemon flavoured scone with a Lemon Glaze but will give alternative flavour options for you to choose.
